Norwegian politicians face voter suppression allegations

Monday, September 14, 2009

A viral election joke has landed several politicians in hot water as Norway goes to the polls to elect its parliament today. A hoax message turning voters away from polling stations is circulating in digital media. The message was also passed on by politicians, who have used social media like Twitter and YouTube to interact with the voters during the campaign. The targeted party is not laughing, and is warning that the activity could be seen as voter suppression.

“Due to full polling stations, Progress Party voters should send their vote by SMS [Standard Modular System] with shortcode FRP to 2009″ That message, and variations of it, was the joke circulating in social media such as Facebook and Twitter or by mobile phone messages.

Norway has taken significant steps towards e-government, such as a trial letting pre-calculated tax returns be filed by SMS. In this context, the General Secretary of the Progress Party, Geir Mo, said that the message was “sabotaging democracy”, because the damage would be done even if just one person believed the message. Kjell Ingolf Ropstad, one of the politicians who passed the message on, refused to apologize for doing it.

The main issue in the election has been whether voters should let the Labour Party dominated majority coalition government stay in power, or vote them out by voting for opposition parties.

Adaptive Equipment For Cerebral Palsy

By Katerina Mitrou

Parents of children with cerebral palsy are no strangers to the use of adaptive equipment – it’s needed on a regular basis to help special needs kids with mobility and other challenges. In addition to a loving support system and devoted family and caregivers, adaptive equipment is an important part of raising a child with cerebral palsy.

Children with cerebral palsy have muscle problems, so the most common type of adaptive equipment put to use is designed to help them move from one place to another and carry out normal activities.

For instance, for children who can’t walk a wheelchair is a necessary piece of equipment. A wheelchair is ideal if you want your child to enjoy the freedom of being able to move around unaided. Many kids who lack the ability to walk can still use their arms to roll the wheels of the chair without any assistance, and find it quite easy to move themselves around without any extra help. If this is not possible, however, motorized wheelchairs are on the market that allows a child to move around independently without use of the arms. A motor attached to the wheelchair moves it around for the child. A child can control the wheelchair with the use of a joystick attached to one of the arm rests.

A walker is another piece of adaptive equipment for children with cerebral palsy – it’s usually made out of light metal and has four adjustable legs. A walker helps kids with cerebral palsy who are capable of walking but suffer from poor balance. It’s the perfect way for a child to be mobile without as much risk of falling and becoming hurt. Walkers provide balance and freedom of movement without the restraints associated with the use of a wheelchair. Some walkers even come with wheels and a basket to hold belongings.

Children with cerebral palsy oftentimes have trouble with fine motor skills. As a result, using utensils can be difficult. Luckily, special handles and grips are available that make it possible for kids to hold onto small items, including forks and spoons. Some companies even manufacture actual eating utensils designed for people with fine motor problems. These are curved or bent to make them easier to use. Pencils and pens may come with grips and handles to make them easier to hold and employ.

Sometimes communication can also be a problem with cerebral palsy. For kids who are difficult to understand (and have trouble talking and communicating with those around them) communication aids come in handy. Books and posters with pictures may allow a child with cerebral palsy to point out objects they want. In the same vein, an alphabet board can assist children by allowing them to spell out messages. A computer device that talks for the child is another way for parents to open up new avenues of communication.

The adaptive equipment you require will depend on your child’s specific needs. Your physician and other caregivers in your child’s life should be able to help you discover what tools have the potential to work best in your situation.

Chinese Foreign Minister visits India amid recent standoff in Ladakh

Saturday, March 26, 2022

Yesterday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended bilateral talks with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

Wang arrived in New Delhi Thursday night after visiting Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Wang discussed the recent Indo-China skirmish in Ladakh which led to the death of twenty Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers and showed interest to conciliate the strained relations between the two countries.

Jaishankar said that the border needs to be completely demilitarised for normal relations with China. He added that, “the frictions and tensions that arise from China’s deployments since April 2020 cannot be reconciled with a normal relationship between the two neighbours.”

Doval called for a de-escalation at the border. Several talks in the past on the level of military commanders at the border have not resulted in any solution. Both the countries have thousands of troops and warfare equipment amassed at the borders.

The ministers also talked about the current situation in Ukraine. Both the countries called for an immediate ceasefire. Both India and China have close bilateral ties with Russia and have not yet condemned its invasion of Ukraine.

Wang arrived in India in secrecy without any notification from either of the governments to the public. Wang left India for Nepal late Friday following an initiative by China to strengthen relations with South Asian countries.

Previously, India criticised the comments made by Wang Yi about the disputed territory of Kashmir at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Summit held in Pakistan.

Perry out, Abbott in: Texas gets new governor

Thursday, January 22, 2015

Greg Abbott was sworn in on Tuesday as the first new governor for the state of Texas in fourteen years. Abbott replaces Rick Perry, who was elected in three consecutive elections as the state’s Governor. Although Perry was not, Abbott is an attorney and recently served as the state’s Attorney General.

During his inauguration speech, Abbott spoke about the issue of border security in the state by saying, “We must do more for the millions of Texans who are tired of seeing our state sovereignty and the rule of law ignored by a federal government that refuses to secure our border”. Abbott in his speech did not address recent drops in state revenue tied to declining oil and gas prices.

Although the state has over a US$1 trillion per-year economy, some economists suggest tough times may be on the horizon as energy prices slump. Fundraising of over US$4.5 million supported the inaugural celebration in the state capital of Austin, including a parade. Abbott is the first Governor in the US to routinely use a wheelchair since George Wallace, former governor of Alabama.

Australian House of Representatives acknowledges Cyclone Larry efforts

Wednesday, March 29, 2006The Australian House of Representatives today acknowledged the impact of the recent devastating Cyclone Larry and the efforts of the support given to the residents and communities of north Queensland in order to restore normal life.

Phillip Ruddock (Liberal, Berowra) moved a motion expressing this after Question Time today, which included a description of the devastation wrought on the area, the response by the Australian Government and the Australian Defence Force, and thanked the efforts of people for their “willingness to roll up their sleeves and get on with the job of cleaning up and rebuilding their towns and centres.”

The Leader of the Opposition, Kim Beazley (Labor, Brand) supported the motion, and congratulated the move to put General Peter Cosgrove in charge of operations, stating that soldiers “know how to work through logistics issues…how to work around officialdom or blockages”, praised both local federal and state members of Parliament, and especially the Labor Queensland state premier, Peter Beattie.

Bob Katter (Independent, Kennedy) was more critical in his speech. Katter thanked Beattie for his immediate response, but also described his confrontation with him and said how first responses were “simply not working”, but also praised Beattie’s decision on Cosgrove. Katter also described how the incident was “the worst natural disaster inAustralian history” and how the banana industry in north Queensland was decimated. Katter went on to describe the financial problems of the people in the region, the “huge gap” between the cost of rebuilding and insurance payouts, also asking “Are we going to pay people virtually nothing to sit on their backsides to do nothing or are we going to pay them a decent wage and have them rebuilding our communities for us?”

The debate is set to continue in the Main Committee, as an opportunity for many more members of the House of Representatives to speak to the motion, without taking up further time in the Chamber.

Economic policy makers conclude Washington meetings

Monday, April 14, 2008

This weekend, April 12–13, the joint Development Committee of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) held its annual Spring Meeting in Washington, D.C.

The Group of Seven (G7), which is comprised of the economic policy makers from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, and Japan, held its annual meeting on Friday, April 11. This meeting, which rotates locations, was also held in Washington, D.C.

The Development Committee meeting ended on Sunday, with a call from the economic leaders for assistance to the countries which been adversely affected by rising food prices. Economic growth has slowed to its lowest rate in five years, while the rising costs of food and energy have not slowed.

Robert Zoellick, the president of the World Bank, said, “We have to put our money where our mouth is. Now. So that we can put food into hungry mouths. It’s as stark as that.” He called for US$500 million in emergency funds for the United Nations’s World Food Programme by May 1, 2008.

“All that has been done [in the past decade] can be undone very rapidly by the crisis coming from the increase in food prices,” said Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the managing director of the IMF.

“Children will be suffering from malnutrition, with consequences for all their lives,” he said. He cited the growing use of land for biofuels as contributing to rising food costs. In the end growing violence and civil unrest could be a result.

Strauss-Kahn further warned that eventually it could become “not only a humanitarian question,” but could also affect developed nations by leading to trade imbalances.

Specifically cited as a current example, was Haiti, where just this weekend, violence escalated resulting in the death of a United Nations peacekeeper and the ousting of Prime Minister Jacques-Édouard Alexis.

United States Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson cautioned that affected countries “need to resist the temptation of price controls and consumption subsidies that are generally not effective and efficient methods of protecting vulnerable groups.”

We have to put our money where our mouth is. Now. So that we can put food into hungry mouths. It’s as stark as that.

Price controls and subsidies “tend to create fiscal burdens and economic distortions while often providing aid to higher-income consumers or commercial interests other than the intended beneficiaries,” Paulson said.

In their Friday statement, the G7 said “there have been at times sharp fluctuations in major currencies, and we are concerned about their possible implications for economic and financial stability.” This marked the first time since the February 2004 meeting in Boca Raton, Florida, that the wording on foreign exchange has been altered.

The G7 presented a plan to strengthen regulation of capital markets. They urged financial firms to “fully” disclose their at-risk investments and improve capital reserves. While the G7 did not outline new monetary or fiscal policies, it did promise action “as appropriate.” The timetable for the plan is 100 days.

While action is unlikely in the short run, they are probably already considering a pre-emptive move in foreign exchange markets to slow the dollar’s decline.

The head of G7 Market Economics at Tullett Prebon, Lena Komileva, observed, “The implicit message is that the G7 is moving closer towards concerted action in the event that persistent volatility in the foreign exchange market presents new risk of systemic failure in the financial industry.”

“While action is unlikely in the short run, they are probably already considering a pre-emptive move in foreign exchange markets to slow the dollar’s decline,” added Komileva.

Economists at Goldman Sachs told their clients, “After a period where the possibility of G7 policy intervention seemed very remote, providing no counterweight to the dollar depreciation forces, we are moving towards a regime where G7 intervention is a more real possibility.”

Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.
