Gambian President Yahya Jammeh concedes electoral defeat

Saturday, December 3, 2016

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh yesterday conceded defeat to now-President Elect Adama Barrow.

Jammeh, 51, took power 22 years ago in a bloodless coup. He had claimed a billion-year mandate. Barrow, 51, is a property developer without political experience. According to the electoral commission yesterday, he won 263,515 votes, equating to 45.5%, while Jammeh won 36.7%, 212,099 votes. A third candidate accounted for 17.8%.

Jammeh is the nation’s second president since independence in 1965. In a public broadcast he hailed “the most transparent election in the whole world,” and congratulated Barrow on “a clear victory[…] You Gambians have decided.”

Born in Basse in 1965, Barrow spent several years working as a security guard in London. He returned home in 2006 and began property development, which he still does. He expressed disappointment he did not win by a larger margin.

Barrow represents a coalition of parties in an unprecedented co-operation. He said his first priority is to pick his cabinet, and has proposed a presidential two-term limit and promised financial stimulation. “It’s the people who have spoken. He cannot hang on,” he said. “We won the election clearly so there’s nothing he can do about it.”

Jammeh refused international observations of the election, banned protests following the result, and switched off the nation’s Internet access on the day of the vote. He pledged to work with Barrow and hand over power in January.

Printing Services: Finishing Services for Finishing Touches Part 1

by

When a printing company prints your files, the whole printing process isnt complete yet. Finishing jobs are part of the whole printing process and part of the whole printing services you avail when you acquire a printing companys services.

What Finishing Touches can do for your prints?

Finishing is an important step in printing for it prepares your prints to become more functional. A variety of finishing services will tell you that this important step buffs your prints to make it look more professional and presentable as well.

Finishing is a post-production service where prints are organized and prepped up according to the specifications you have put in for your print product of choice. Whether it is an offset printing project or a custom one, all your print projects undergo finishing.

Variety of Finishing Options

Finishing is not just one simple step, but a collection and sometimes a combination of different processes and techniques used to shape your prints to perfection.

Printing jobs, as said earlier, does not end with producing sheets upon sheets of colorful prints. These seemingly fresh and raw prints are still to be refined through finishing. Postcards, as an example, undergo finishing because it simply needs to be cut down to size.

However, the same postcards may need more than just cutting. Depending upon certain needs or demands, postcards can be die-cut or laminated and the like.

Here then are some popular finishing selections available to make your prints truly effective, functional and astounding all at the same time.

Binding

This process is used to hold all the pages or sheets of a multi-page document such as newsletters, calendars, catalogs or booklets and magazines just to name a few.

The most common binding available and used by printing companies is saddle-stitching where a couple of staple wires are attached to the spine of the book/booklet, holding all the pages in place. Unlike other popular binding techniques, it doesnt require drilling or punching holes just to hold all the pages together.

Other binding techniques are coil binding, Wire-O binding, plastic comb and case binding.

Cutting

Cutting is simply done to remove the bleeds on your prints, so that the cut can be made as precise as possible along the trim line. Your prints are cut to your desired size, disposing the 1/8 inch bleed along the sides.

Cutting, however, is different from die-cutting as die-cutting involves cutting your prints according to a specific shape.

Collating

This process sits alongside binding as it is responsible for organizing the pages in the right sequence. When it is time to put all the printed inside pages and cover pages together, it is through collation that you can flip through your magazine and find the right page easily.

Drilling

If you want to put in holes for your calendars, drilling is used to create the holes you need to hang them up with. Popular hole sizes for calendars are 3/16″, 5/16″ and 1/4″.

Folding

Brochures are one of the most popular materials with folding. Folding creates folds on your print, virtually dividing them into appropriate sections. Greeting cards and pockets folders are also run through wheels or rules to create such folds. However, thicker stock undergoes scoring too to make folding crisp and perfect.

Popular folding options include bi-fold or half-fold, tri-fold, Z-fold, map fold and gate fold.

These are but some of the finishing touches involved in your prints. See how you can come up with better ideas in customizing your prints with these kinds of finishing and see how you can appreciate your prints better.

MSN browser upgrade leaves users frozen

Monday, November 20, 2006

Microsoft‘s subscription-based MSN Explorer Internet browser left many of its users frozen out beginning on Friday of last week. Launching the application brought the user to a window stating that the software encountered a problem and had to be closed.

The Internet Explorer browser software bundled with the Windows operating system remains operable, along with other non-MSN software. Subscribers to MSN are still able to retrieve e-mail by accessing their Hotmail account. Telephone support wait times to resolve the connectivity problem with the browser exceeded 45 minutes on Sunday evening. Beginning on Saturday, callers were prompted that wait times were “unusually long due to high call volume”.

A query to on-line chat with technical support to resolve the issue was met with, “I sincerely apologize for the length of time that it took you to get to us. We have been swamped with sessions and I am just glad that you finally got me to help you out.”

The silent and automatic upgrade to the 9.5 version of MSN Explorer, from verson 9.0, is experiencing difficulties on some machines. Users can log on to support using their account at membercenter.msn.com, click the Support button on the left column of the page, and then select under Subscribed Services / Sign In the link “MSN Internet Access”. On-line chat, e-mail, and phone support is available there. Hint: on-line chat is probably the fastest support option.

The existing MSN Explorer software will need to be removed, some Windows registry folders may need to be removed, and the software completely re-downloaded and re-installed.

Dial-up accounts can expect the download to be 93 minutes, for broadband, 9 minutes.

UK company “seriously considering” GPS tracking devices in school uniforms

Saturday, August 25, 2007

The leading supplier of school uniforms in the United Kingdom, Lancashire-based manufacturer Trutex, has announced it is “seriously considering” including GPS tracking devices in future ranges of its uniform products after conducting an online survey of both parents and children.

“As a direct result of the survey, we are now seriously considering incorporating a [tracking] device into future ranges” said Trutex marketing director Clare Rix.

The survey questioned 809 parents and 444 children aged nine to 16. It showed that 44% of parents were worried about the safety of pre-teen children, and 59% wanted tracking devices installed in school apparel. 39% of children aged nine to 12 were prepared to wear clothing with tracking devices in them, while teenagers were notably less enthusiastic and more wary of what Trutex has admitted they see as a “big brother” concept.

However, Trutex has claimed the tracking devices would bring about worthwhile benefits, including being a valuable resource for parents who wanted to keep a close eye on where their children were at all times.

“As well as being a safety net for parents, there could be real benefits for schools who could keep a closer track on the whereabouts of their pupils, potentially reducing truancy levels” says Rix.

Each year, Trutex supplies 1 million blouses, 1.1 million shirts, 250,000 pairs of trousers, 20,000 blazers, 60,000 skirts and 110,000 pieces of knitwear to the UK.

It is not the first company to manufacture school uniforms with a central focus on child safety; last week Essex firm BladeRunner revealed it was selling stab-proof school blazers to parents concerned about violence against their children. The blazers were outfitted with Kevlar, a synthetic fibre used in body armour. It has already received orders internationally, including Australia.

If the Trutex tracking devices go ahead, it is unclear where in the uniform they will be located.

Texans vote online for new license plate

Monday, February 4, 2008

For the first time in Texas’s history, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is conducting an online vote to help decide which license plate design the state will use beginning in early 2009.

The week-long vote is being held at dot.state.tx.us. It started Monday at noon and will end on February 11 at the same time. Anyone can vote for one of five license plate designs, including the current design.

The designs are:

 • Traditional Texas — This simple design features blue highlights at the top and bottom and a gold star.
 • Lone Star Texas — This design uses a mountainous landscape under a bright, cloudy sky as its background. In the top left corner is a white star amid a splash of red and blue.
 • Natural Texas — The background is a field filled with wildflowers.
 • New Texas — This red, white and blue design features a skyline composed of landmarks from major Texas cities including Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio. A large gold star is faintly visible in the background.
 • My Texas — This is the current license plate that was introduced in 2000. It features silhouettes of a desert landscape with an oil derrick and a man on horseback, as well as a starry night sky with a space shuttle.

All of the designs incorporate the state’s name, an outline of the state, and the state’s nickname, “The Lone Star State”. TxDOT says they took legibility and reflectivity into account when making the designs, in order to promote safety and law enforcement.

The decision to allow a public vote was made because the state was running out of six-character combinations to assign to drivers. The new license plates will have seven characters, regardless of the public’s decision.

“By the end of this year, we will be out of license plate combinations for the three letters and three numbers that we currently put on the general-issue plate,” said Rebecca Davio, director of Vehicle Titles and Registration. “Because we need to change the plate, we thought it was the perfect time to invite Texans to participate in a design selection.”

According to TxDOT, it took 33 years to exhaust the number of six-character combinations, and using current population growth figures, they project it will take 35 years to run out of seven-character combinations.

The Texas Transportation Commission must give final approval of the design. TxDOT says the commission is “enthusiastic” about giving the public an opportunity to vote for the new design.

TxDOT considered allowing the public to submit designs, but ultimately decided that it would use a “substantial amount of state-worker time” and wouldn’t be a “prudent use of taxpayer money”.

At the time of this writing, an unofficial vote count showed the “Lone Star Texas” design in first place with over 22,000 votes. “Natural Texas” was second with over 14,000, followed by “Traditional Texas”, “New Texas”, and the current design “My Texas”.

Year after year, Botox Cosmetic is the most popular, non-surgical cosmetic treatment in the United States. There are many reasons that millions of patients are treated each year. Botox treatments are simple and virtually pain free. The injections safely improve expression lines, concentration lines and animated wrinkles of the face by temporarily weakening selective small muscles. These are the same small muscles that eventually create deeper, static creases, so regular Botox treatments can also prevent the formation of some wrinkles. Dr. Chang Soo Kim of Gold Coast Plastic Surgery and Laser Center combines Botox treatments with wrinkle fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm. These popular hyaluronic acid wrinkle fillers are injected directly into skin wrinkles to fill unwanted creases, especially around the mouth and cheeks. The results are instantaneous. Also, Juvederm and Restylane are effective treatments for plumping lips and filling the hollows under eyes. These fillers have the added benefit of lasting up to a year. Those who want a longer lasting wrinkle treatment or who have more advanced signs of aging such as thinning of collagen and fat can combine Botox with Sculptra injections. Sculptra works by stimulating the body to produce new collagen. Often called a ?liquid facelift,? patients see the effect of thicker skin, fewer wrinkles and increased volume over time. Many patients prefer Sculptra since results can last over two years. All products used by Dr. Kim have FDA approval for cosmetic purposes.

The final component that needs to be addressed is skin discoloration and fine lines. Dr. Kim prefers the multi wavelength Sciton Joule laser system for it’s safety and versatility. The erbium laser can create anything from a light surface Microlaser Peel for fine lines to a deeper Pro-fractional skin tightening. A BBL treatment can be added to this to erase unwanted brown spots and red discoloration. The Lite Touch Facial Rejuvenation can combine all of the latest injectables, laser and skincare to give an overall youthful appearance to the skin.

B.B. King’s daughters allege blues musician was poisoned

Thursday, May 28, 2015

Two daughters of blues legend B.B. King are claiming on Monday that he was poisoned by business manager LaVerne Toney and personal assistant Myron Johnson. The allegations were made by daughters Karen Williams and Patty King in affidavits provided by their lawyer to the Associated Press.

“I believe my father was poisoned and that he was administered foreign substances,” Williams and King said in identically worded sections of the affidavits. “I believe my father was murdered.”

Williams and King also allege that family members were prevented from visiting their father prior to his death. The lawyer for King’s estate says the claims are ridiculous.

“I hope they have a factual basis that they can demonstrate for their defamatory and libelous allegations,” lawyer Brent Bryson said in a statement to the Associated Press.

Bryson says that King was appropriately cared for by medical professionals up until his death on May 14 in Las Vegas.

An autopsy of B.B. King’s body was carried out on Sunday by the Clark County, Nevada coroner’s office. The coroner’s office said on Twitter that it would be a minimum of six to eight weeks before results of the autopsy are finalised.

The Las Vegas Police department said that a potential homicide investigation into the death of the blues legend will depend on autopsy findings.

Original Story
 • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

In February of 2006, the Savarino Services Construction Corp. proposed the construction of a seven million dollar hotel on Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo, New York. In order for the hotel to be built, at least five properties containing businesses and residents would have to be destroyed. It was not certain whether the properties were owned by Savarino or by the landlord Hans Mobius. The hotel was designed by Karl Frizlen of the Frizlen Group, and is planned to be a franchise of the Wyndham Hotels group.

Elmwood Avenue is known by the community as a popular shopping center, and Nancy Pollina of Don Apparel (who is “utterly against” the construction) claims it’s the only reason why students from Buffalo State College leave campus. Additionally, Michael Faust of Mondo Video said he did not want to “get kicked out of here [his video store property].”

In 1995, a Walgreens was proposed to be built on the same land, but Walgreens later withdrew its request for a variance because of pressure from the community. More recently, Pano Georgiadis tried to get the rights to demolish the Atwater House next to his restaurant on Elmwood Avenue, but was denied a permit due to the property’s historical value. He has since been an opponent to the hotel construction.

In the process of debating the hotel, it was thought that a hotel had previously existed on the proposed site, however; research done at the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society had shown that no hotel had previously existed on the site.

How Medical Billing Services Help Save Time For Medical Practices

By Peter Geisheker

In the healthcare industry, physicians are responsible for more than just their patients. They have to maintain their office, pay their bills, meet payroll, deadlines and many other responsibilities. It can be mind-boggling when you think of all the responsibilities of a physician today.

One of the biggest tasks that anyone in the medical field must undertake is medical billing. This is one of the biggest headaches that they have to deal with.

Filling out paperwork for each patient that they see every day and submitting to the insurance company for billing can extend the day of a physician considerably. It is a very time consuming task and if there is a mistake on the forms, the insurance company will reject it and the physician has to start all over again. It can be very frustrating especially when insurance companies take up to three months or longer to send their payment. For small practices, it can make it difficult to meet financial obligations. They need assistance, however many physicians don’t know where to turn for help.

That is where a medical billing company can be of assistance. A medical billing company is a company of trained professionals who have the experience in medical billing and dealing with insurance companies. Medical billing companies can speed up the billing cycle by filing all of your claims electronically, eliminating the process of entering the information manually. What this means is that each refund is processed immediately, and the refund is received within days instead of weeks or months.

Medical billing is available to everyone in the medical industry, from a Dermatologist to a Brain Surgeon. Whether you have a big practice or small, using a medical billing company will allow any physician more time to spend with patients and less time filling out paperwork. With a medical billing company, there are fewer mistakes, thereby fewer rejections. Using a medical billing company will also allow physicians to establish new patients for their practice.

Medical billing company personnel know the latest laws, rules and regulations in medical billing and because of the nature of their business, most likely have special relationships with insurance carriers and that can speed up the process.

Medical billing companies can be found everywhere. It is a rapidly growing industry. However, it is a good idea to research each company that you are interest in. It is critical that you ask certain questions in the interview process to insure that you will be choosing the right medical billing company for your practice.

How fast are claims expedited?

What type of software is used?

Do they offer follow up to unpaid bills?

Do they stay current with all of the new regulation?

Is all information confidential and secure?

These questions require answers, and if you are not satisfied with them, move on to the next company on your list.

It is important to find a medical billing company that can handle your business needs. It is equally important that they offer a revenue return policy and that is has a high success rate.
