French Workers stay at home for Whit Monday

Monday, May 16, 2005

In France, workers by the millions stayed at home during the Whit Monday holiday despite the government’s cancellation of the traditional Pentecost public holiday. Some acted in defiance of the government’s decision, while some took leave or were put on forced leave by their employers due to uncertainties of public transportation.

Following the 2003 heat wave, which caused the deaths of an estimated 13,000 elderly people in France, the administration of prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin has proposed the suppression of one day of public holiday in order to use the supplemental generated tax for a fund for the caring of the elderly.

Whit Monday was selected because, in normal years, France has several public holidays in May. Furthermore, attendance of religious celebrations is low, so holidays of a religious origin are nowadays generally mere family reunions.

However, the reception of this new working day was mixed. The administration says it promotes solidarity with the elderly. Trade unions and opposition groups argue that the measure is an ill-conceived stunt aimed at hiding the government’s bad handling of the problems of the elderly.

For instance, many remember that in 1956, the government created a tax (the vignette) on motor vehicles, allegedly for funding measures for the elderly. But in 1973, the products of this tax came, as any other tax, into the government’s general fund.

With this measure, the French government intends to raise 2 billion to be donated to a new public establishment, the “national fund for solidarity for autonomy.” The new fund would be chartered to deal with losses of self-sufficiency of elderly or handicapped people. 1.2 billion € are earmarked for elderly people, 0.8 for the handicapped.

Trade unions had called for strikes in urban public transportation and paralyzed traffic in 27 cities, including Clermont-Ferrand, Lille, Montpellier ou Strasbourg. However, SNCF (the national railway operator) did not strike and RATP (the Paris transportation authority) suffered only minor disturbances, though both are normally known for their frequent and disturbing strikes.

SNCF considered the day as a holiday for payroll purposes and instead increased the work day by 1’52”, a measure that majority leader Nicolas Sarkozy considered shocking and contrary to the objectives of the government.

The protests are also widely considered to be motivated by the unpopularity of the administration of president Jacques Chirac and prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin. Recent statistics show a five year-high for unemployment at 10.2%.

This discontent may result in a majority of “no” in the vote for the ratification of the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels to join rivals Bayern Munich

Wednesday, May 11, 2016

In a deal announced yesterday, German association football defender Mats Hummels, the current captain of Borussia Dortmund (BVB), agreed to sign a five-year contract with his boyhood club — and arch rivals of Dortmund — Bayern Munich next season. The arrangement was conditional on Hummels undergoing medical tests before signing.

Mats is one of the best centre-backs in the world. With him we will increase the quality in our team even further.

Hummels previously spent twelve years with the Bavarians, Bayern Munich, coming from their youth system. He moved to Dortmund in 2007 after appearing that year in one Bundesliga match for Bayern.

With BVB, center back Hummels won two Bundesliga titles, one DFB-Pokal Cup in 2012 when they won the domestic double under Jürgen Klopp; and a silver medal in the 2013 UEFA Champions League. He also won the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

“Mats is one of the best centre-backs in the world”, said Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, chairman of FC Bayern München AG. “With him we will increase the quality in our team even further.” Dortmund’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said Hummels had “always been open and fair towards” them.

Hummels is to join Bayern side on July 1 — one year before his pre-existing contract expires with BVB. Dortmund’s website quoted Hummels saying “the decision was not easy for me after eight and a half successful years with BVB. I have always been proud and am still proud to wear the BVB jersey and to be part of this extraordinary team.”

Dortmund is to face Bayern Munich in DFB-Pokal Cup this month. After joining Bayern, Hummels would share the dressing room with his former Dortmund teammates Robert Lewandowski and Mario Götze.

Alex Reid wins UK’s Celebrity Big Brother 2010

Saturday, January 30, 2010

Mixed martial arts fighter Alex Reid, nicknamed “The Reidenator”, has been voted the winner of UK Celebrity Big Brother 2010. He won what is the last series of the programme in the final on Friday night, having received 65.9% of the votes from the public.

Musician Dane Bowers finished in second place, while Vinnie Jones, a former British soccer player and now a film actor, came in third place. After his departure from the Big Brother house, he commented about Alex: “I taught him everything I know.” Vinnie had become unpopular with fans as he was said to have been bossy to other celebrities inside the house. Speaking to presenter Davina McCall, he stated: “I was just trying to keep order in the house because a lot of people were selfish. I was just trying to keep some stability in the house.”

Musician Jonas Altberg, better known by his stage name Basshunter, finished in fourth place. Actress Stephanie Beacham left the Big Brother house in fifth place.

Alex Reid has been the girlfriend to former glamour model Katie Price since July 2009. Fellow housemate Dane has also previously been Katie’s boyfriend. When Davina McCall mentioned Price during the interview with Alex, the crowd gave out a negative reaction of booing. In response, he said: “Come on guys, don’t do that. I’m sorry guys… I’m not sorry, I really love Katie Price.”

During the interview with Davina McCall, Alex commented about his victory. He said: “What an amazing, fantastic start to a new year. Vinnie has been very inspirational to me. He’s transitioned from athletic to actor, which is what I want to do. I’m not getting booed now. That’s amazing… I’m speechless. My whole agenda in here was to be myself.” Alex also spoke of contestant Dane. “I was surprised by what a cool dude he is. I’m really looking forward to seeing more of Dane,” Alex said.

Four killed in suspected US drone strike in Pakistan

Saturday, January 9, 2010

Pakistani intelligence officials said today that at least four people have been killed in a suspected US drone strike in the North Waziristan province.

Officials say missiles hit a house and a vehicle near the town Miranshah. The region is near Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan.

“The US drone fired two missiles on a house. The house was completely destroyed,” said an unnamed security official.

The attack comes a day after Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari warned that US drone strikes were undermining Pakistan’s “national consensus” in his country’s war against rebel groups in the area. However, visiting US lawmakers told Pakistani officials the US could not afford to abandon the controversial missile strikes.

Personal Loans For Bad Credit Borrowers Find Your Loan Fast!

By Jessica M Peterson

Do you have bad credit but are in need of a personal loan now to help you pay for everything from everyday living expenses in a bad economy to major appliances, and more? If so, you may be hesitant to apply for a personal loan because of your negligent credit history. However, there are many wonderful lending institutions that process loans for a specific group of borrowers, those with bad credit. And you can qualify fast.

What Is A Personal Loan?

A personal loan is a loan that is written out for a non-specific purpose. Most lenders do not ask you what purpose you have when you apply for a personal loan. That makes a personal loan perfect for lots of different needs that you may have. There are two types of personal loans: the unsecured personal loan and the secured personal loan. Let us look at these two types more closely so that you can determine which is best for your situation.

Unsecured Personal Loans For Bad Credit

The unsecured personal loan is a loan that is granted solely on the basis of your signature, and is therefore often referred to as a signature loan. Because the lending institution does not ask you to post or pledge collateral against the value of the loan, the lender is relying on your past payment history when judging your creditworthiness. Because of this, most bad credit borrowers may find it difficult to procure a bad credit loan. You can always improve your chances of getting an unsecured personal loan by asking someone who has better credit than you do to apply with you on your personal loan application. This person is known as a cosigner.

The unsecured personal loan is usually not the right type of loan for the bad credit borrower who does not have a cosigner. If you are approved for an unsecured personal loan with bad credit, be prepared to pay a greatly increased amount of interest in the form of a higher interest rate. This higher interest is assumed because of the greater risk that a lender takes when loaning money to someone who possesses a poor credit record. For those bad credit borrowers who have no collateral and are without the benefit of a willing cosigner, the higher interest is often justified to get the loan that they need.

Secured Personal Loans For Bad Credit

The easiest personal loan for those with damaged credit is the secured personal loan. The secured personal loan is a loan granted based on the borrower’s collateral. The lender will hold surety interest in the collateral that you pledge until you have satisfied the terms and conditions of the lending agreement and repaid them in full. The secured personal loan is the perfect loan for the bad credit borrower because it allows the borrower to rebuild their damaged credit file through monthly payments that fit the budget quite nicely.

Bad credit borrowers should borrow with caution, however; if your payments are late, your lender can force the sale of your collateral to recoup the amount of money extended to you. The interest is much more reasonable on bad credit secured personal loans, making them much more affordable than the unsecured version.

Monday, December 31, 2007

What would you tell your grandchildren about 2007 if they asked you about it in, let’s say, 20 year’s time? If the answer to a quiz question was 2007, what would the question be? The year that you first signed on to Facebook? The year Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse fell apart? The year author Kurt Vonnegut or mime Marcel Marceau died, both at 84?

Let’s take a look at some of the international stories of 2007. Links to the original Wikinews articles are in bold.

The Truth About Weight Loss Surgery

Submitted by: Martin Stanwyck

Weight loss surgery has become popular because of its quick, dramatic results, but is it truly worth the cost? Is there a better option?

Patience is a virtue many of us do not possess. When it comes to weight loss, we like to see immediate results. There is nothing more frustrating than faithfully following a diet when the extra weight refuses to budge. Losing weight can be such a slow and agitating process that it s understandable why people have turned to more drastic options such as weight loss surgery.

Today, over 58 million American s are obese. Although this is a stunning statistic, it s not so surprising in a country where so much of our lives center on food. How many times have you been out to eat in the last month? How many times have you eaten fast food? If food is fuel for your body, what kind of fuel are you putting into your system, and how can you truly expect it to function properly when you are following an improper diet.

More now than ever, obese individuals are turning to weight loss surgery for a solution. Today, many medical insurance plans actually cover the costs of the surgery, claiming that the benefits outweigh the health risks. Weight loss surgery has become a popular way to rid yourself of unwanted pounds in a quick, effective, and efficient process.

Among the recent weight loss surgeries on the market is the popular gastric bypass surgery. Available to only those individuals deemed morbidly obese, this weight loss surgery reduces the stomach in size. Patients emerge from the surgery, no longer able to eat really large meals. Their appetites have shrunk, and they begin feeling full after very small portioned meals.

The eye-catching feature of this weight loss surgery is the fact that patients lose an average of 2/3 of their excess weight within the first two years following the surgery. Patients who have this weight loss surgery literally shed their extra weight quickly with dramatic results. Friends and family usually lavish them with praise about how great they look.

What you might not know, however, is the dangers connected with this weight loss surgery. 10-20 percent of post op patients require follow up operations to correct resulting problems. About a third of the patients of this weight loss surgery develop gallstones. About 30 percent of people having the surgery later develop vitamin deficiency because they do not take the proper supplements. There are also other issues that have frequently occurred in patients that your physician may not be telling you about.

Dumping syndrome is a huge risk connected with this weight loss surgery. This occurs when food is broken down too rapidly when moving to the small intestine. If a patient who has this weight loss surgery overeats, he or she may vomit, feel nausea, or have diarrhea.

If those aren t enough reasons to be skeptical about weight loss surgery, there is the last and most important reason; recent studies have shown that one in fifty patients die from the surgery.

For those people struggling with their weight, weight loss surgery may seem like an answer that s more like a dream come true. It s not only a solution to their problems. It s a quick one with dramatic, immediate results. It s important, however, to realize that weight loss surgery should be a last result.

If you have a problem with overeating due to hunger or cravings, you may feel you ve tried everything, but there could be hope yet. If you haven t heard the buzz about Hoodia Gordonii, you really should give it a try. No, this isn t another fad diet pill. In fact, it s not even a drug. Hoodia would fall under the classification of vegetable since it s from a cactus like plant. Although it just appeared on the market in 2004, bushmen in Africa have been consuming this plant for years to ward off hunger during long journeys. Imagine being able to lose weight while never being hungry. Ask yourself, Have I really tried everything? Wouldn t it be worth a try before signing on for something as drastic and potentially dangerous as weight loss surgery?

About the Author: When weight loss is the necessary outcome, using Hoodia Gordonii is almost essential. Visit Martin Stanwyck s site

Chinese police arrest escaped North Korean convict

Wednesday, December 1, 2021

As reported by state-run Chinese newspaper The Beijing News on Sunday, a North Korean defector has been captured by law enforcement after a 42-day long chase following his escape from prison. Going by the Chinese name Zhu Xianjian, the 39 year-old man had been arrested for illegal entry into China, theft, and larceny. His deportation back to North Korea from Jilin Province was scheduled to take place in 2023, after his sentence ended.

Images and video of the capture were released alongside the report, showing Zhu being carried into a police car by law enforcement, near the lakeside house where he was apprehended. According to a video released by the South China Morning Post, reports say that Zhu was shot in the leg while trying to flee. A 200,000 yuan (31,284 USD) bounty had been instituted for any tips or information that could lead to the defector’s capture, Business Insider reported. Zhu had escaped from Jilin prison on October 18, after climbing on a storage shed and leaping off a wall.

Zhu had escaped from North Korea in July 2013, after swimming across the Tumen river, which acts as a natural border between North Korea and China. Prior to his escape, Zhu had been living as a coal miner in North Korea.

North Korean defectors face imprisonment and possible torture if caught in China. A bilateral border agreement signed in 1986 between China and North Korea warrants the deportation of all Korean defectors caught by Chinese authorities back to North Korea.
