London, England — Yesterday at London’s Basketball Arena, the Canada women’s national wheelchair basketball team earned their first victory of the London Paralympics when they defeated the Australia women’s national wheelchair basketball team 57–50.

Canada took a one point lead into the second half, when the scores were 33–32 because of a last minute foul that sent Canada to the free throw line where they capitalized by making one of their shots. 4.5 point player Janet McLachlan and 2 point player Katie Harnock dominated in minutes played for Canada during the first half, playing all 20 minutes and leading their team in scoring with 11 first half points for McLachlan and 12 for Harnock. The Canadian team was loudly supported by spectators, earning more cheering from the largely Great Britain supporting fans than the Australians.

The second half saw Canada slowly increase their lead, keeping tied with Australia 4–4 in the first half of third, 6–4 in the last half of the third, 6–4 in the first half of the fourth, and 8–6 in the last half of the fourth. McLachlan finished the game as Canada’s leading scorer with 28 total, 17 in the second half. Harnock had a quieter second half only scoring 2 points to finish with 14. Cindy Ouellett was the team’s third leading scorer, finishing the game with ten.

The Canadian team supported their team from the bench, chanting “Get it out! Get it out!” when on defense and “Let’s go Canada” when on the offense. Other times, one player led the team in chanting support for their players on the court. The team was consistently louder than the Australian bench.

Throughout the game, the Canadians tipped themselves over more in their chairs than the Australians. Ouellett tipped once, and bounced in her chair, with a wheel leaving the ground as she attempted to block shots and steal the ball. Ouellett and Australian Cobi Crispin locked wheels, and required a break in the game where Australia’s coach came on to the court and removed Ouellett’s wheel to detach the pair before putting it back on again.

Following the game, Australia’s Amber Merritt said of playing Canada, “I have the utmost respect for Canada. They’re a great team, but we’ll refocus on the game tomorrow [against the Netherlands] and go out and play like we know we can, the Australian way.”

Prior to the start of the game, McLachlan was the team’s dominating player in the competition. She was ranked eighth in the competition in field goal percentage, and was Canada’a highest ranked player in this category. She ranked second in the tournament in total field goals made per game, with 12. Teammate Katie Harnock ranked eighth. Tara Feser ranked fourth in the tournament for 2 point field goal percentage at 57.1%, while McLachlan ranked ninth with 50.0%. McLachlan was second in 2 point field goals made per game, at 12. Harnock was tied for first with Mexico’s Floralia Estrada Bernal in the competition for 3 point field goal percentage at 20%, and was ranked second in the tournament for most 3 point field goals made with one.

As a team coming into the game, Canada was ranked sixth in total field goal percentage, eighth in free throw percentage, sixth in average rebounds per game, second in fouls, and last in turnovers.

Coming into this game, Canada had lost their first game 70–59 to the Netherlands. They are scheduled to play Brazil today.

Tips For Choosing Log Cutting Tools

byAlma Abell

When it comes to choosing log cutting tools bigger is not always better. In fact, choosing the right tool depends a lot on the type of job and the size of the timber or logs you are working with. It also depends a lot on your ability and strength as well.

The good news is that there is a range of log cutting tools in various sizes, weights and options that will make any job much easier. Although trying out the tools is always a good option, you can also use the tips below to narrow down your choices and determine which size, type and style of log cutting tools will be best for you.

Longer Handles Equal More Force

When it comes to chopping types of log cutting tools, particularly an axe, you want a larger head and a longer handle for bigger jobs or for bigger logs. This allows you to have the maximum force when you bring the axe over your head and down in the arcing motion both for felling trees as well as splitting or cutting wood.

Smaller hand axes or hatchets are good for smaller projects, removing small limbs or even removing saplings and brush. These are also a better option in small spaces where a full swing is not possible.

Blade Shape

Adze blades come in a variety of different shapes for different types of projects. The most common blade for these log cutting tools is a flat blade or slightly curved blade with a straight handle. Like the axe the longer the handle the more force you can generate, but with the adze force may not always be as important as this is more for finishing and shaping rather than chopping or cutting.

There is also an adze with a very pronounced curve to the blade. This is often called a gutter adze as it resembles the shape of the gutter on your house, with the half circle curve to the inside or bottom of the blade. These are used to create pronounced rounded edges where the size of the blade will control the actual curve.

If you aren’t sure about the log cutting tools that you need talk to someone with experience in woodworking, log cabin construction or tool manufacturing.

Saturn moon Enceladus may have salty ocean

Thursday, June 23, 2011

NASA’s Cassini–Huygens spacecraft has discovered evidence for a large-scale saltwater reservoir beneath the icy crust of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. The data came from the spacecraft’s direct analysis of salt-rich ice grains close to the jets ejected from the moon. The study has been published in this week’s edition of the journal Nature.

Data from Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer show the grains expelled from fissures, known as tiger stripes, are relatively small and usually low in salt far away from the moon. Closer to the moon’s surface, Cassini found that relatively large grains rich with sodium and potassium dominate the plumes. The salt-rich particles have an “ocean-like” composition and indicate that most, if not all, of the expelled ice and water vapor comes from the evaporation of liquid salt-water. When water freezes, the salt is squeezed out, leaving pure water ice behind.

Cassini’s ultraviolet imaging spectrograph also recently obtained complementary results that support the presence of a subsurface ocean. A team of Cassini researchers led by Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, measured gas shooting out of distinct jets originating in the moon’s south polar region at five to eight times the speed of sound, several times faster than previously measured. These observations of distinct jets, from a 2010 flyby, are consistent with results showing a difference in composition of ice grains close to the moon’s surface and those that made it out to the E ring, the outermost ring that gets its material primarily from Enceladean jets. If the plumes emanated from ice, they should have very little salt in them.

“There currently is no plausible way to produce a steady outflow of salt-rich grains from solid ice across all the tiger stripes other than salt water under Enceladus’s icy surface,” said Frank Postberg, a Cassini team scientist at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

The data suggests a layer of water between the moon’s rocky core and its icy mantle, possibly as deep as about 50 miles (80 kilometers) beneath the surface. As this water washes against the rocks, it dissolves salt compounds and rises through fractures in the overlying ice to form reserves nearer the surface. If the outermost layer cracks open, the decrease in pressure from these reserves to space causes a plume to shoot out. Roughly 400 pounds (200 kilograms) of water vapor is lost every second in the plumes, with smaller amounts being lost as ice grains. The team calculates the water reserves must have large evaporating surfaces, or they would freeze easily and stop the plumes.

“We imagine that between the ice and the ice core there is an ocean of depth and this is somehow connected to the surface reservoir,” added Postberg.

The Cassini mission discovered Enceladus’ water-vapor and ice jets in 2005. In 2009, scientists working with the cosmic dust analyzer examined some sodium salts found in ice grains of Saturn’s E ring but the link to subsurface salt water was not definitive. The new paper analyzes three Enceladus flybys in 2008 and 2009 with the same instrument, focusing on the composition of freshly ejected plume grains. In 2008, Cassini discovered a high “density of volatile gases, water vapor, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as organic materials, some 20 times denser than expected” in geysers erupting from the moon. The icy particles hit the detector target at speeds between 15,000 and 39,000 MPH (23,000 and 63,000 KPH), vaporizing instantly. Electrical fields inside the cosmic dust analyzer separated the various constituents of the impact cloud.

“Enceladus has got warmth, water and organic chemicals, some of the essential building blocks needed for life,” said Dennis Matson in 2008, Cassini project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“This finding is a crucial new piece of evidence showing that environmental conditions favorable to the emergence of life can be sustained on icy bodies orbiting gas giant planets,” said Nicolas Altobelli, the European Space Agency’s project scientist for Cassini.

“If there is water in such an unexpected place, it leaves possibility for the rest of the universe,” said Postberg.

Open An Account For Banking, Find One In Schiller Park

byadmin

At some point we all have to do a little banking, but before you can do that, you must open an account. There are a lot of banks and credit unions in the Schiller Park area, and most of them have the same process for opening an account. Here are some of the steps:

Bring Valid Identification

It doesn’t matter where you go, you are going to have to show some type of identification before you can open a bank account. Generally, this must be a state identification, such as a driver’s license or ID card, or a government identification, such as a passport. You will also need your Social Security number and a piece of mail that is postmarked, which shows your current address.

Bring a Deposit

The other thing that you need to open a bank account is a deposit. Most banks and credit unions require at least $25, but some of them might make an exception. The money that you bring will immediately be put into the account. You will, however, get temporary checks, which will allow you to take money out. You also might have access to an ATM card or debit card. Within a week or two, you should get permanent checks and a permanent card, which you can use to access your money.

Caveats to These Requirements

In some cases, you don’t need these requirements. For instance, if you are opening an account for a child, you won’t need a photo ID. However, you will need a copy of the child’s birth certificate and Social Security card in most cases. If you are opening a business account, you will need things like the company’s tax ID number.

School bus crashes during driver’s examination

Tuesday, July 3, 2007

A woman, who was taking the road test to become a licensed school bus driver, crashed a bus into a utility pole in White Plains, New York, today. The wreck occurred on South Kensico Road between the intersections with Minevera Place and Oakley Avenue.

The Journal News reported that the accident occurred at 11:30 a.m. EDT (UTC-4) and that neither the student driver nor the examiner from the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) was injured.

According to The Journal News the road was closed in both directions. Police and workers from the utility company, Con Edison, were on the scene inspecting the damage. The utility pole had snapped at the bottom and it was leaning on the bus.

Wikinews went to the crash site and found that Con Edison crews were still working to replace the pole. Nearly five hours after the crash, a new pole had been installed and the old one was being held parallel up against it. Workers were transferring the wires onto the new pole.

Kensico Road had been reopened, but only in one lane. Workers let traffic pass alternating between one direction and then the other. Ironically, the green sign that is affixed to the pole reads “DMV test site starts here.”

Why Work With A Public Relations Agency}

Why Work With a Public Relations Agency

by

Chriss Tyrrell

If you own or work in management capacity for a company then PR or public relations is something that you should be giving close consideration to. This is because no matter what type of business a company is in big or small, theres always at least one area, usually more where it can benefit from a public relations agency. You see employees qualify as the public, so in essence, employee relations is public relations.

Good Public Relations Does Reflect On the Bottom Line

So precisely what does public relations consist of and how is it used to a a person or business entities benefit. The fact is that without exception, everyone and every business engages in public relations, even though they may not even be aware that they are doing it. The reason for this is simple and that is that good PR does reflect on a company or persons bottom line.

A public Relations Agency Can Influence Howe People View a Business

In short, public relations is any means by which a person or business goes about the task of influencing how the general public or their employees view themselves or a company. As a general rule, positive is good and negative is bad but in recent times situations have come to light with some Hollywood celebrities where bad publicity turned out reflect positively on their bottom line. They became more famous and more in demand as the result of them being painted up as a bad guy.

Working Preemptively By Creating Good Press

As a general rule however, for the vast majority of business entities bad publicity is a bad thing. No one wants to do business or work for a bad company and no one wants one in their community. Controlling what makes it out in print about a company can be difficult, if not impossible. This is why when it comes to print media, most companies employ a public relations agency to work preemptively. That is that they will put out their own good press by way of the Internet or local news papers.

A Monthly News Letter Either in Print Or Online

Another popular method for preempting public relations is to create and make a available or distribute a monthly news letter, either in print or online or both. With a regular news letter people grow to expect the news thats put out in it and tend to be less challenging in how that view it. Also a news letter can focus on a series of PR issues rather then in a more singular press release.

Doing your Own PR To Save Money Are You Really Saving Money?

The problems tend to arise is when people or companies start to think that they can do their own PR in house. By taking this approach they’re basically failing to take into full consideration the total gravity of good public relations. Anything that is done the first time should always be considered practice. So when a person or company begins to do their own public relations, they are in essence practicing and shouldn’t expect the same results that a public relations agency would deliver.

Chris Tyrrell writes for the Message Merchants a public relations agency based in the Midlands UK.

Fire burns home of late singer Johnny Cash

Wednesday, April 11, 2007

A fast-moving fire engulfed the home of late singer Johnny Cash on Tuesday. The lake-side home, located in Hendersonville, Tennessee, was the home of the late singer and his wife, June Carter, from the late 1960s until their deaths in 2003.

The home was purchased by former Bee Gees singer Barry Gibb in 2006, and was undergoing renovations at the time. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but it is believed that a flammable wood preservative that construction workers had applied contributed to the speed in which the flames spread. Firefighters responded within 5 minutes of the fire breaking out. No workers were killed in the fire, but one firefighter suffered minor injuries.

“Maybe it’s the good Lord’s way to make sure that it was only Johnny’s house,” said Richard Sterban of The Oak Ridge Boys, who lived down the road from Cash. Neighbor Marty Stewart said “So many prominent things and prominent people in American history took place in that house—everyone from Billy Graham to Bob Dylan went into that house.” The home was where Cash wrote many of his hit songs, and appeared in the Cash music video for “Hurt“.

Adam Folkard and Nick Norton ready for more men’s softball

Monday, March 19, 2012Hawker, Canberra — Coming off a national championship win for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) men’s open team in mid-February, Australia men’s national softball team representatives Nick Norton and Adam Folkard are getting ready for more softball later this year, including the Australian club championships to be held in Brisbane in June.

Folkard and Norton have both won the World Championships and have each won a total of ten national championships with the ACT side. They are both named to the current men’s national team, which has roughly thirty players, and believe they are likely to survive the December cut down to eighteen players who will represent Australia at next year’s World Championship in Auckland, New Zealand.

The World Championship is one of the two most prestigious available to male softball players. The other is the International Softball Congress, an event Folkard and Norton have both competed at.

As national team representatives, there are a lot of expectations for them. In Australia, there is almost no financial support for the men’s game so they must cover most of their own costs, including travel to and from international competitions. According to Folkard’s father, these costs can be prohibitive. In one year, when Folkard was a representative on the men’s U18, U23 and Open team, it cost A$15,000 for travel and other expenses just for Folkard. When costs for bringing family members such as Folkard’s sisters to major international tournaments, the costs were even higher. Folkard, his father and Norton all joked this cost his father an investment property to allow Folkard to continue to compete at the highest level. Both Folkard and Norton currently work as tradesmen to support softball playing.

Beyond money, the national team requires players to be actively involved in wider softball community. Players must represent a club at the club championships in Brisbane if they want to retain a spot in the squad. Folkard plays for a Western Australian club and Norton plays for a Sydney based club, driving down from Canberra to play every Sunday during the season.

Folkard and Norton have both played softball at the highest level in the United States, where the men’s game is not yet fully professionalized but still presents more opportunities for players than are available at home. For several years, Folkard has gone to the United States for three-month stints, playing for teams in Chicago, Pennsylvania, and New York. One side he played was sponsored by Ernst and Young. Folkard currently plays for a Canadian side and has been trying to convince Norton, whom he has grown up playing softball with, to join him like Norton has done one previous season. According to Folkard, playing with a North American club has certain advantages. The clubs pay for his travel to and from Australia, and pay for Championship rings. When asked how North American clubs sign Australian players, he said they follow men’s softball in Australia and call up players to offer contracts. Australian men’s players gain additional exposure to potential clubs when they compete, with some sides approaching them during the North American season and seeking to contract them for the following season.

Both men would love the opportunity to play softball in the Olympics, but believe such an opportunity is unlikely. According to them, softball at the Olympics is a women’s game intrinsically linked to men’s baseball, and men’s softball is unlikely to ever be considered on the programme as a result.

Folkard and Norton both play for the same club in the ACT territory club competition. Their team has secured a grand final berth for the match in ten days. They are waiting to find out who they will play against based on a match this weekend. Both have previously won this competition.
