Australian Air Force crews “at war” with Veterans’ Affairs over compensation

Friday, August 19, 2005The Australian Federal Government has revealed today that it is going to give A$21 million (US $15.76 million) as compensation to approximately 600 former RAAF maintenance workers, who where exposed to highly toxic chemicals while working on the fuel tanks of the nation’s F-111 fleet.

Under the government’s proposal, depending on the amount of exposure, a worker can expect to receive between A$10,000 and A$40,000 (US $7,500 – $30,000) to help cope with the side effects. The aircraft maintenance program started in the 1970s and was suspended in the late 1990s when the former workers started to show signs of medical problems ranging from memory loss to neurological problems.

The F-111 Deseal/Reseal Support Group responded to the government’s package with anger. The Group’s president Ian Fraser said “A$40,000 for a ruined life is simply not enough … We’ve already got people who have died, who are dying, people who have lost their homes.”

He went on to describe that his group, which supports the workers and contractors who where based at Amberley Air Base, was “at war” with Veterans’ Affairs Minister De-Anne Kelly.

Quality And Sturdy Wooden Block Toys

Many manufacturers modified their way of creating toys like wooden block models. They started being used industrially, thus they produced new materials such as tin. As the century advances are spreading also instructive games and start talking first educational toys.

The plastic toy transforms

But the real revolution will come from the toy’s hand s. XX. It raises concerns about hygiene and aseptic materials. Arise in this way, and in the 30’s, dolls made of celluloid, paste-board, etc.. Interwar sample of this is the fondness for toy soldiers and dolls dressed by fashion and hairstyles. Although the Anglo-Saxon influence and Americanized doll will soon arrive.

A mid-century, in 1948, applied for the first time plastic doll. The plastics revolution resulted in increased production and lower prices. The dolls are left to be democratic and accessible only to lords. It has not stopped evolving. Apart of finding the top safe toys, you need to look for wooden block kits.

Electricity is allied with the game

The addition of electricity to the toys came in a casual, like so many discoveries throughout history: At the beginning of s. Joshua Lionel Cowen XX created an electric train as a lure to the window of his toys, but received so many requests that the advertising attraction eventually became a classic in the toy industry. In 1912 already produced models with lighting inside. After the birth of the automobile helped unbridled enthusiasm and were soon selling small cars made of metal to scale were adding lights and electric motor.

It is also worth mentioning the story of a potato that became the best selling toy in history. In 1952 it was born a unique toy, Mr. Potato. He was also the first toy advertised on television. But his image was very different to what we know today. The game itself consisted only of a series of pieces (arms, mouth, nose, mustache, pipe, arms …) that were stuck on a real potato, who named the Product: Mr. Potato Head (Mr. Head Potato). The idea was the result of manufacturers. But, were all this leaves a wooden block?

Believe it or not, blocks are still around and they can help children more than any other toy. For this Christmas you can give away a great game for your children. There are many toys targeting girls aged between six and twelve. For instance, online options are like simulators that have been adapted for children’s feminine. Manufacturers have developed mannequin dolls considering aesthetics in 3D characters and placed them in universes. Yet, many believe a wooden block is the top choice not only due to its simplicity but because it is for both genders.

Seven Canadians killed by Israeli air strike

Sunday, July 16, 2006

Seven Canadians were killed, and six others were in critical condition, after an Israeli raid in Lebanon on Sunday, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay announced. The deaths were believed to be the first recent casualties in Lebanon from any G8 country.

Associated Press reports anonymous Lebanese officials saying the family of Canadians were killed at their home in the town of Aitaroun. Many Lebanese citizens have emigrated to Canada and often return to spend their summers in the south of Lebanon.

Sixteen thousand Canadians have registered with the embassy in Beirut, but MacKay said the number of those present could be as high as 40,000. “We’re calling for restraint in all sectors right now and hope to be able to have those ships in place and citizens moving out of Lebanon as quickly as possible.” MacKay said.

Parliament Hill demonstrators in Ottawa on Sunday protested the Harper government’s position regarding the ongoing strikes. One placard declared, “Killing children is not a ‘measured response’,” referring to the G8 statement released earlier.

During a protest in Montréal on Sunday, one woman said she had just been informed that two of her family members were killed in the Israeli air strike. The unnamed woman screamed “My father, my uncle — they’re dead. What’s happening?” She said her family members were in the Middle East for a summer vacation.

The deaths occurred on the fifth day of Israel’s military attacks in Lebanon, instigated by the capture of 2 Israeli soldiers and killing of 8 others by the Shiite Hezbollah in a cross-border attack. The fighting has caused at least 148 fatalities in Lebanon and 23 in Israel.

US Basketball: Jazz win, maintain Northwest Division lead

Tuesday, February 6, 2007

Mehmet Okur scored 12 of the last 14 points for the Utah Jazz in the final minutes of their game against the Chicago Bulls on Monday night, propelling the Jazz to a 100-95 win against the Bulls. Okur finished with 20 points and was the high scorer for the Jazz, who now have won three in a row. He played most of the fourth quarter despite picking up a fifth foul early in the final period. In addition to Okur’s contribution, Deron Williams contributed 18 points and 13 rebounds in the effort.

Kirk Hinrich was the game’s leading scorer with 26 points, and Luol Deng contributed 23. However, the Jazz shot 50% from the field and dished out 24 total assists. The Bulls could not match those numbers, only shooting 40% and earning 15 assists. The lack of ball movement was obvious early on, as the Bulls committed three offensive fouls in the second quarter – all as the result of Bulls players attempting to drive the ball rather than pass and try to break the effective zone of the Utah Jazz. Ben Gordon also picked up a flagrant foul early in the second quarter, starting off what would be an ugly twelve minutes for the visiting Bulls. The Bulls were outscored 33-18 in the second quarter, leaving them down 57-43 at the half.

It almost wasn’t enough of a lead for the Jazz, as the Bulls were able to fight back and cut the lead to three with a three-point shot from Chris Duhon with 1:20 remaining in regulation time. However, the Jazz answered right back with an Okur three-point field goal, and the Bulls could not recover. While the Bulls would answer back with another field goal, the Jazz would score the next four points and pull away with the victory.

  • Andres Nocioni was scratched with a foot injury. Team doctors believe that he may have a torn or inflamed plantar fascia; MRI results are not due back for another day or two. [1]
  • Jazz coach Jerry Sloan received a technical foul for arguing with the officials midway through the fourth quarter.
  • Earlier in the day, the Bulls’ Tyrus Thomas was named as one of the four participants in the 2008 Slam Dunk Competition during All-Star Weekend in Las Vegas.

Liftmaster 371 Lm Garage Door Remotes}

Liftmaster 371LM Garage Door Remotes

Programming your Liftmaster remote is relatively easy. The best place to start is by looking on the back of your Chamberlain Liftmaster 371LM remote. Here you will see a label with the clicker’s information. The main item that we are looking for is the model number which is indicated by the “Chamberlain”. Note that in Canada, it might say 371LMC, or if you have an accessmaster 371AC remote, it will indicate 371AC. The only differences between these models are in the name. Functionally they are identical.

The first letter in the model number will indicate the series. The 3 in this case indicates Chamberlain Liftmaster’s newest Security+ ERT line. Note that this should not be confused with the original security plus line as they operate on different frequencies and are thus incompatible. Any model number of remote that begins with this 3 will be compatible with other remotes, keypads, or keychains in this series. The last number in the model number indicates the type of remote. A Liftmaster 370LM, for example, indicates that it is a keychain remote. The Liftmaster 371LM is the one button configuration of transmitter. The 372LM, 373LM, and 374LM each add a button to their configuration. The 376LM and 377LM are wireless keypads. The number on the top left of the label indicates internal part codes. The number used on most 371LM remotes is IC: 2666A 1573.The number on the top right is the date of manufacture and is indicated in a format such as 06/07. The FCC ID is the number at te bottom of the remote and is often indicated by FCC ID: HBW1573. This number is shared by multiple models of remote so it should not be used to determine compatibility with the Chamberlain Chamberlain Liftmaster 371LM line of remotes. The last code in on the text on the left most side and is 132C2000-7. This simply indicates the regulations quoted as required by the FCC.Once you know which remote that you will need, you will need to program your Liftmaster 371LM remote. To program the 371LM, press the purple button on the back of the logic board. Right afterwords, press the black button on the 371LM clicker. If everything went well, your new remote should be fully functional with your garage door opener. The Liftmaster 371LM should last for years without any maintenance. If any is needed, it is usually due to a dead battery. This can be easily fixed by inserting a screwdriver into the side panel to pry in into two pieces. You can then replace the button cell battery. This battery can be found at most supermarkets and hardware stores. For any other problems, it is almost always easier to buy a new garage door remote than to try and fix an old one.

Surgeons reattach boy’s three severed limbs

Tuesday, March 29, 2005A team of Australian surgeons yesterday reattached both hands and one foot to 10-year-old Perth boy, Terry Vo, after a brick wall which collapsed during a game of basketball fell on him, severing the limbs. The wall gave way while Terry performed a slam-dunk, during a game at a friend’s birthday party.

The boy was today awake and smiling, still in some pain but in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery, according to plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love.

“What we have is parts that are very much alive so the reattached limbs are certainly pink, well perfused and are indeed moving,” Mr Love told reporters today.

“The fact that he is moving his fingers, and of course when he wakes up he will move both fingers and toes, is not a surprise,” Mr Love had said yesterday.

“The question is more the sensory return that he will get in the hand itself and the fine movements he will have in the fingers and the toes, and that will come with time, hopefully. We will assess that over the next 18 months to two years.

“I’m sure that he’ll enjoy a game of basketball in the future.”

The weight and force of the collapse, and the sharp brick edges, resulted in the three limbs being cut through about 7cm above the wrists and ankle.

Terry’s father Tan said of his only child, the injuries were terrible, “I was scared to look at him, a horrible thing.”

The hands and foot were placed in an ice-filled Esky and rushed to hospital with the boy, where three teams of medical experts were assembled, and he was given a blood transfusion after experiencing massive blood loss. Eight hours of complex micro-surgery on Saturday night were followed by a further two hours of skin grafts yesterday.

“What he will lose because it was such a large zone of traumatised skin and muscle and so on, he will lose some of the skin so he’ll certainly require lots of further surgery regardless of whether the skin survives,” said Mr Love said today.

The boy was kept unconscious under anaesthetic between the two procedures. In an interview yesterday, Mr Love explained why:

“He could have actually been woken up the next day. Because we were intending to take him back to theatre for a second look, to look at the traumatised skin flaps, to close more of his wounds and to do split skin grafting, it was felt the best thing to do would be to keep him stable and to keep him anaesthetised.”

Professor Wayne Morrison, director of the respected Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and head of plastic and hand surgery at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital, said he believed the operation to be a world first.

Plant explosion in Apex, North Carolina

Friday, October 6, 2006

Up to 17,000 people are being evacuated in Apex, North Carolina after a chlorine gas leak occurred during a Hazardous Waste facility explosion and fire.

Residents are advised to keep windows closed, turn off all air conditioning and that tenderness of the mouth, gagging and nausea are typical signs of poisoning. They are advised to stay away from the fire and any smoke, as it could be a health hazard. CNN reports that air quality tests run by the NCDENR indicate nothing especially harmful in the air near the plant.

Area residents are being advised to call 919-856-7044 for general information as 911 lines are overloaded. Bruce Radford, manager of the town in suburban Raleigh, said that the business district, schools and the town hall will remain closed on Friday.

No fatalities have been reported. WRAL-TV reported that 90 residents of a nearby nursing care facility were moved to a local hospital as a precautionary measure. About 20 Apex residents were reported to have been treated and released for respiratory symptoms related to exposure.

Officials are presently unsure of the cause. The fire and subsequent explosions started sometime after 9 p.m. EST Thursday, October 5.

Changing weather conditions in the area threaten additional evacuations. A section of State Highway 55 has been shut down near the incident.

The company, Environmental Quality of Wayne, Michigan, had been warned and fined $32,000 by state regulators in March of 2006 for hazardous conditions at the plant, which temporarily stores hazardous materials including chlorine, pesticides, and PCBs.

WRAL-TV reports that Sulfur, Oxidizers, Chlorine, Pesticides and PCBs were stored in the facility.

Fire crews from Cary, Apex, Raleigh, Wake County and Fairview are assisting in the effort. However, there is no effort to fight the fire as it would be too dangerous to firefighting personnel. It will eventually burn itself out.
